Car Hire Without A Credit Card - Can I hire a car with a debit card?

If you’re looking at going on holiday and where hoping on getting a rental car but don’t have a credit card – then don’t be concerned.

Here at Indigo Car Hire we work with several suppliers who can accept other form of payment for your rental & deposit, such as Visa UK debit cards, there are a few criteria that you need to meet however, so if you are looking for car hire without a credit card, keep reading for further information & restrictions.

Can you rent a car without a credit card?

Simply put, yes, you can. Majority of companies simply won’t allow you to rent without a credit card that is in your name & on top of that almost all don’t allow for cash, prepaid cards or check payments. The only other option you have available, that some companies are able to allow is car hire with a debit card, which has a few additional caveats.

How to rent a car without a credit card

As previously mentioned it is possible to hire a car without a credit card if you have a debit card. Visa UK Debit cards will be accepted with certain suppliers as long as it meets the requirements:

A valid debit card in your name (Visa or MasterCard for example although many different cards are accepted.)
Full valid UK driving license
Proof of address like a utility bill
The debit card needs to have enough balance to cover the rental cost & deposit

Visa Debit Card Restrictions

When hiring a car with a debit card there are unfortunately some restrictions. Although our suppliers can accept most types of debit cards, not all types of card are accepted. Also the name on the card used to pay must match the name on the licence of the main driver of the hire car.

Do I need to pass a credit check if using my debit card to hire?

If renting a car in the UK and you are a UK resident most of the large multinational suppliers will carry out an electronic address check to ensure you have strong enough links to the address provided. However most of the suppliers with the exception of 1 or 2, still carry out the same checks so not unique to when you need to hire via a debit card. Key indicator are if you are named on the Electoral Register and named on the council tax bill.

When renting a car overseas as an inbound client our suppliers do not carry out any checks.

Do I need to leave a deposit if hiring with a debit card?

Most suppliers do require a security deposit when renting a car, in the UK we have a range of options. The best value suppliers would request a £200.00 – £300.00 deposit. However we do have selected locations where our supplier does not require any deposit, so a full zero deposit.

In Europe we have options where you can just leave a fuel deposit of 110 EUR, and there is no mandatory requirement to take the Super Cover as this can be the case with some of the smaller budget suppliers.
