Can I Rent a Car With a Digital Licence?

A select number of countries now offer digital driving licences, which can be used on domestic flights, as age verification when purchasing age-restricted products, and to prove your right to drive.

The UK and Ireland will soon be rolling out digital driving licences too, and this has led many of our customers to wonder, ‘Can I rent a car with a digital licence?’ If that’s you, then keep reading. We’ll answer this common question here.

Do Rental Car Companies Accept Digital Licences?

Not all of our suppliers are willing to accept digital licences. However, we predict that as these digital IDs become more popular and more of our customers request this service, a greater number of our suppliers will allow people to rent a car with a digital licence.

How Do I Book Car Rentals With a Digital Licence?

For now, only a small number of providers will allow you to rent a car with a digital licence. To book, you will need to get in touch with our reservations team instead of using our online booking engine. This is to guarantee we can arrange a suitable rental with an agreeable supplier, and to ensure you don’t experience any issues upon collection.

For more information or to secure your booking, either call us on +44 113 289 9281, email us at [email protected], or chat to us online using the chat function at the bottom right of this page.

Do I need to pass a credit check if using my debit card to hire?

If renting a car in the UK and you are a UK resident most of the large multinational suppliers will carry out an electronic address check to ensure you have strong enough links to the address provided. However most of the suppliers with the exception of 1 or 2, still carry out the same checks so not unique to when you need to hire via a debit card. Key indicator are if you are named on the Electoral Register and named on the council tax bill.

When renting a car overseas as an inbound client our suppliers do not carry out any checks.

Do I need to leave a deposit if hiring with a debit card?

Most suppliers do require a security deposit when renting a car, in the UK we have a range of options. The best value suppliers would request a £200.00 – £300.00 deposit. However we do have selected locations where our supplier does not require any deposit, so a full zero deposit.

In Europe we have options where you can just leave a fuel deposit of 110 EUR, and there is no mandatory requirement to take the Super Cover as this can be the case with some of the smaller budget suppliers.
