Car Hire With Baby Seat

Planning a holiday with a young family? Your rental car may be all booked and ready to go but if you are travelling abroad the last thing you may think of bringing is a baby seat. Your rental car doesn’t come equipped with baby seats or child seats, these are considered optional extras by car rental companies so it’s best to know if you actually legally have to have a baby seat before going ahead and booking one, although safety is always first so it may be worth booking one anyway.

Rules Around Baby Seats
If you are hiring a car it may be useful to know the laws surrounding baby seats to know whether you need one or not. Please note these are the rules for the Uk.

– Rear-facing baby seats are suitable for babies up to 13kg
– Forward or rear facing baby seats are suitable for children up to 18kg
– After your child has surpassed these you need to look at having a child car seat which is law until the child is 135cm tall or 12 years old.
– Only Eu approved child seats can be used in the Uk, they have the capital E in a circle on the label.
– You must deactivate any front airbags when using a rear facing baby seat in the front.

How much do baby seats cost?
Baby seats range depending on the supplier from anywhere between £5-15 in the Uk, typically. Depending on the time of your rental the cost may add up and eventually not be worth it. It’s a bit of a hassle but sometimes it may be worth buying a baby seat yourself instead as from leading shops you can get small baby seats from around £30-70 depending on where you go. Therefore if you do have a longer term rental this may be an option to look into.

Do I need to pass a credit check if using my debit card to hire?

If renting a car in the UK and you are a UK resident most of the large multinational suppliers will carry out an electronic address check to ensure you have strong enough links to the address provided. However most of the suppliers with the exception of 1 or 2, still carry out the same checks so not unique to when you need to hire via a debit card. Key indicator are if you are named on the Electoral Register and named on the council tax bill.

When renting a car overseas as an inbound client our suppliers do not carry out any checks.

Do I need to leave a deposit if hiring with a debit card?

Most suppliers do require a security deposit when renting a car, in the UK we have a range of options. The best value suppliers would request a £200.00 – £300.00 deposit. However we do have selected locations where our supplier does not require any deposit, so a full zero deposit.

In Europe we have options where you can just leave a fuel deposit of 110 EUR, and there is no mandatory requirement to take the Super Cover as this can be the case with some of the smaller budget suppliers.
