                About Keflavik International Airport

Over the past 20 years or so Iceland’s delights have started to attract visitors in serious numbers, and after a recent 4 day trip it is easy to see why. The majority of people choose to stay in the greater Reykjavik area, which is home to half of Iceland’s population, this figure does not so much point to the population density of this area, but more to the sparsity of Iceland’s other regions, the country’s landmass is similar to that of England with a fraction of the size of its population. The expanse of opening space outside the city is noticeable. Hiring a car is by far the best way to make your explorations, Taxis and tours are expensive and lack the freedom many of us are seeking.

Keflavik is the largest airport in Iceland and the country’s main hub of transportation with around 2.4 million passengers passing through each year. The main carriers at the airport are Icelandair and Wow air and most flights are international as it’s almost an exclusively international airport with very little domestic flights flown. There are destinations to several airports across the world including to the UK, USA, Germany, Switzerland and more.

The airport is located 48 kilometres from the capital city Reykjavik, you can opt to either use the public bus, private transfer or decide to hire a car. The later is my far the most popular option, renting a car provides freedom to explore the many natural gems Iceland and travel down the many unbelievable beautiful scenic routes, you will be spoilt for chose when it comes to places in Iceland that will honestly wow you. Iceland is when I say this a very special place.

Why Choose Indigo Car Hire At Keflavik Airport

A long with finding you the best offer and deals we also can give you the best price available at the time, we compare all the best prices given your current circumstances and then apply our discounts to the best appropriate price. On top of this another service we can offer is that we can alert you if the price drops any lower than the original price you booked it in, therefore we can amend the booking and save you even more money than the original cost of the rental, trust Indigo Car Hire to get you the best overall deal no matter what.

The service we provide our customers is simply second to none, the many online reviews echo this, booking with Indigo Car Hire will give you peace of mind and reassurance you will experience without any doubt a stress free rental when arriving into Keflavik Airport.

We have managed to arrange several offers in the past and we have always aimed at making car hire more available to a wider audience of people whilst doing so. Some of our best offers so far include…

                Young Driver Car Hire

If you are under 25 and want to hire a car at Keflavik airport you will unfortunately struggle, however we have talked to a few suppliers there and managed to come up with a deal which allows young drivers from the age of 20 to hire with us given that they have had one year driving experience before picking up the car.

                Debit Card Car Hire

Hiring a car without a credit card can be a tricky task as it’s the most commonly accepted form of payment for car hire around the globe, however we can arrange an offer that means you can pay through an alternative method. The alternative method we negotiated is debit card car hire, your debit card must however meet our restrictions that are in place.

                Unlimited Mileage Car Hire

Go the extra mile with Indigo Car Hire quite literally, most rental companies limit you to the amount of mileage that you can do over the rental period and any mile that you go after that will be charged at a standard rate. However with Indigo we can offer a free unlimited mileage deal all you have to do is ask us!

                Low Deposit Car Hire

If you are considering going down the renting a car route, one of the challenges come across when starting the search is the large security deposit some of the rental providers at Keflavik require, good news. We have Low Deposit options available, our lowest deposit option is only 100 EUR, which the supplier call a fuel deposit. Even better the deposit can be left on either a credit card or a debit card. If you require the low deposit avoid booking online so we can quote and place you with the low deposit attached.

Collecting Car Hire at Keflavik Airport

Keflavik Airport in our experience is an efficiently run airport, at the time of writing in December 2024 passing through immigration was a breeze, from touch down to exiting customs took no longer than 20 minutes. This is not to say any of us should become too complacent, when invited, always ensure your flight number is added upon booking, this can only be of benefit if you are presented with any anomalies on collection.

As you exit customers you will see the signs that easily direct you to the car rental desks, in fact you would be hard pushed to miss them, and this is when it becomes important to understand your specific method of collection. For those that are booked with one of the on airport providers you simply present yourself at the relevant desk, currently you will find Avis, Budget, Europcar and Hertz occupying them. In our experience these are all well run companies. Indigo Car Hire acts as an agents for all of these companies amongst others, pulling through discounted rental rates. Another pointer to the efficiency of the Icelandic’s is the simple ticketing system in place that covers all 3 desks, although on our recent trip there was no queue whatsoever. Our advice where possible is to take advantage of the online pre check in facility, which will keep the time spent at the desk to a minimum, either way after a few minutes you are exiting the terminal, keys in hand. The walk to the car park where the cars are located is less than 100 meters via a covered walk way, which can be very welcome when collecting in the winter months, the airport is very exposed and can be very windswept. Once you get to your hired car, our recommendation as always is to take a quick video / picture of the car, ensuring the condition of the car matches the condition given on the checkout sheet, it is always worth hanging onto this paperwork and presenting upon return.

For renters that have booked their car hire with an off airport supplier it is a case of following the procedure laid out on your booking voucher, which will commonly involve having to call for the shuttle bus, on the odd occasion we have seen people experience issues here, either with connecting via their overseas phone or by not getting any answer from the rental company, generally a good broker would step in and lend support, certainly here at Indigo Car Hire we would be available at the end of the phone resolving any issues. It is worth noting these off-site airport suppliers are all clustered together no more than 500 meters from the terminal building. You will find it useful to head to the Aurora Hotel, this will act as a good reference point, from there you will not miss the off airport suppliers, you will find the likes of SIXT, Enterprise, Blue Car Rental, amongst others. Your onward journey will take you onto route 41, getting out of the airport is as straight forward as it gets.

                • Passport or National ID Card

                • Car Rental Voucher

Sand Ash And Gravel Protection Options

In countries like Iceland, where the terrain is very different from typical locations you may need to protect your vehicle in order to ensure that you don’t damage the car and have to pay a hefty bill. One of the common issues is sand, ash and gravel so in order to combat this we offer an extra protection option. We would suggest if possible and if your budget permits, renting a SUV or a 4×4, the roads if you stick to the main roads are very well kept,  however in the winter months when you are for certain to experience the colder weather with temperatures that often drop below zero degrees, combined with the limited day light a good solid car to explore we would say is a must.

I hire cars through Indigo regularly and the service is always impeccable. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I like the fact that they are there to help should there be any problems with the hire companies who can be a law unto themselves. I call them my umbrella.

                Car Hire Keflavik Airport FAQs
Do I need to hire a 4x4 when renting in Iceland?

This does depend on where you plan to travel, if you stick to the main city and ring roads in the summer we would say a standard 2WD car would be fine, however if you plan to visit Iceland in the winter months or your visit will include exploring deeper Iceland via the F Roads a 4×4 is a legal requirement.

In the winter months the F roads are normally closed off, due to the roads not been road worthy due to ice and snow.

If you budget is tight, the Suzuki Jimny is a good option. Mini 4×4 which is bundles of fun to nip around in.

Are rental cars in Iceland fitted with winter tyres?

If you are renting a car and the collection date is between the 01 Nov – 15 April, the car will have winter tyres fitted, this even applies to even the smaller 2WD cars. Some rental suppliers even go further and fit all cars with studded winter tyres, which give you better traction when driving on icy roads.

Is it safe to drive in Iceland in winter?

Driving in Iceland over the winter months isn’t dangerous, but would point out at times can be challenging given the weather in Iceland can be very unpredictable. With limited hours of day light, zero degrees temperatures icy roads, and often fog, planning ahead for journeys allowing extra time would recommended.

Over the winter months the more of the beaten track (F Roads) are closed off for drivers safety, meaning you can only venture Iceland via the main roads.

What are F Roads in Iceland?

F Roads are gravel mountain roads. The F stands for Fjall which is the Icelandic work for mountain. The roads lead you into central Iceland into the highlands and let’s say more challenging roads, but are for sure worth it leading you into some of the most beautiful parts of Iceland.

If you want to include travelling on the F Roads, do not travel in the winter months, the F Roads are closed due to the icy conditions. Also make sure you book a 4×4 vehicle, as this is a legal requirement if travelling on any of the F Roads.

Do I need an International Drivers Licence to hire a car in Iceland?

As long as your Drivers Licence is has full translation in Roman Alphabet no IDP – International Drivers Licence or Permit is required.

What are the speed limits on the roads in Iceland?

Like any country the speed limits vary depending on the type of road you are travelling on.

                Urban Roads – 50 km/h

                Gravel Roads – 80 km/h

                Paved Rural Roads – 90 km/h

What is the minimum age to hire a car in Iceland?

Good News, Iceland unlike many other countries do allow drivers from the age of 18 to hire a car. Do you do however need to have held a full Drivers Licence for a minimum of 12 months.

Do I need to pass a credit check if using my debit card to hire?

If renting a car in the UK and you are a UK resident most of the large multinational suppliers will carry out an electronic address check to ensure you have strong enough links to the address provided. However most of the suppliers with the exception of 1 or 2, still carry out the same checks so not unique to when you need to hire via a debit card. Key indicator are if you are named on the Electoral Register and named on the council tax bill.

When renting a car overseas as an inbound client our suppliers do not carry out any checks.

Do I need to leave a deposit if hiring with a debit card?

Most suppliers do require a security deposit when renting a car, in the UK we have a range of options. The best value suppliers would request a £200.00 – £300.00 deposit. However we do have selected locations where our supplier does not require any deposit, so a full zero deposit.

In Europe we have options where you can just leave a fuel deposit of 110 EUR, and there is no mandatory requirement to take the Super Cover as this can be the case with some of the smaller budget suppliers.
