Driving In Tasmania in Winter: A Comprehensive Guide

If you’re ever struggling with where you’d like to visit; maybe somewhere not too busy with tourists but still has equally beautiful sights. The Australian state has had a renowned history as being one of the best places for natural viewing wonders. From the Lake St Clair National Park to the top of Mount Wellington; Tasmania is a perfect place for a road trip since all things considered, it is a relatively small country.

Despite being in Australia, Tasmania is subject to some colds during its winter season. Being in the south, it is subject to different seasonal weather, with the conventional cold winters of December being one of the best times in Tasmania for its comfortable weather even along the coast. A perfect time for those who want to escape the ice of the Christmas season and are open to driving in Tasmania in winter or even looking for a winter car hire.

What you’ll need

The driving laws in Tasmania (and the rest of Australia) allow for relatively lax requirements for driving. Requires only the bare essentials of a driver’s license and identification.

The only other issue that may arise comes from the insurance of a vehicle. Of course, if you’re renting from one a car hires in Tasmania there’s no issue in that regard as all the necessary legal documentation that is required with a car will come included.

Equipment for driving in Tasmania in winter

Regardless of the conditions you are travelling in through Tasmania, it is still located in Australia and is subject to some potentially extreme weather conditions – heat or otherwise. Some basic items that are good to keep on hand, such as:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight
  • Water and non-perishables
  • First aid kit

By simply having these items on hand you can ensure you are travelling safely and avoiding some of the large stretches of land without easily accessible facilities.

With what you need to know, if you’re a UK driver, you’ll have an easy time getting used to driving. With the conventional rules of driving on the left side and the occasional road toll. Beyond this, it is worth mentioning that. Some road signs may be unique to Australia and are all measured in kilometres, it is best to situate yourself with what to expect in the province you’re travelling to and avoid any confusion.

Which car for you

What differentiates Tasmania from the majority of other travel destinations, is the naturally rough terrain. With how mountainous the environment is there are some natural issues that come with long-distance travel. Although nothing that should deter you, it is worth preparing an appropriate car that is reliable enough for harsh weather and suitable for enough people.

With that being said, you can never go wrong with a strong SUV. Regardless of whether you’re planning a long-distance trip or just short drives through the scenic mountain ranges, an SUV car hire will get you where you need to go.

Staying safe when driving in Tasmania in winter

As it comes when driving in a foreign country, there are always some very basic things to keep in mind; which will protect you and other drivers from the environment.

Driving in Tasmania is a reasonably straightforward process, by keeping yourself and the environment in mind, there should not be any sight you aren’t able to enjoy.

  • Keep valuables safe – with how rural some of the Tasmanian areas are, safely storing items may not be easily accessible. Extra precautions should be taken when travelling with any valuables.
  • Keep emergency supplies on hand – basic necessities such as food and water may be the difference in an emergency. Although not as extreme as the outback, if you are going off the beaten path, it’s always good to have a backup.
  • Prepare for winding roads – Many of the roads in Tasmania are winding, even outside the mountainous areas. Wildlife may also roam free in these areas as well.
