The Airport ‘Menera’ sits some 4 miles from the centre of the old town, the ‘medina’ ensuring you can hit the ground running on your arrival. It is worth been mindful that passing through immigration is not as swift as some other destinations. On a recent trip in October the wait was over 1 hour, and I was reliably informed it was 2, 2 months prior.

This knowledge is especially useful when selecting the pickup time of you hire car. Allow a little more thought on this, if you are arriving on an evening flight, nearly all car rental companies have their own separate closing times. It is always better to overestimate rather than the other way around, we have said it before and will do so again, always add your inbound flight number when placing a booking, and if you know you are going to be substantially delayed, call and make someone aware.

Collecting on arrival

The first thing to say is that there are no car hire desks to be found in the arrivals hall. Once through immigration it is your baggage carousels, the customary bureau de change and your Maroc Telecom kiosks. After through a cursory customs barrier you are invited to exit the terminal as soon as possible. Ideally you would have already reviewed your car hire confirmation which will provide collection instructions, for those who are booked with an on-airport supplier, you simply need to walk directly across the car park in front of you. Here, you will find the various car hire office, at the time of writing this consists of Avis, Hert, Budget, Sixt and Aircar.

For those that are booked with one of the off-airport operators you will pick up the shuttle from one of the bus stops, behind the car rental kiosks, to those that have an objection of collecting your hire car off, you may be pleasantly surprised to know you will be shuttled no more than 500 metres. The Alamo office I used on my last visit had a separate waiting room, that included plush sofas and a Nespresso machine dispatching complimentary. We could all do with a brief rest and a drink before embarking on the next stage of one’s journey and personally I found it more straight forward not contending with driving out of a bust airport car park.

Collecting part way through your stay

If you have planned your stay giving yourself a couple of days to explore both the new and old town a hire car would not be suitable, a push bike would not doubt be more apt. The large hotels give plenty of parking but your own two feet or a taxi are your best bet for those trips to the ‘souks’ or the ‘square’. Depending on where you base yourself in Marrakech, it is going to be either a short walk or short taxi journey to the airport, hailing a taxi will take you all of 30 seconds! Remember if collecting from one of the one airport car hire providers at Menara Airport you are heading straight to the offices based in the airport car park. Please also remember you will need your passport, driver’s license and payment card.
