Driving in Greece: A Comprehensive Guide

With so many places in the world to travel it can be borderline overwhelming to try and pick a place worth visiting, even after that there is no shortage of planning required. Though out of all those choices, very few are as welcoming and brimming with culture as Greece; known for its millennium of history. Driving in Greece is nothing short of a once in life opportunity; with so many Iconic (and for good reason) locations. However, as any driver can tell you, many hurdles come with acquiring and even navigating a country like Greece.

Whilst most travel brochures will try to convince you why you should visit a location, they won’t provide support on how you should manage the trip – Indigo will. Providing you with a convenient rental, be it for short-term transport or long trips and everything in between, travelling through Greece has never been easier.

What to know about driving in Greece

When travelling abroad, it’s always useful to know the basics of the country, customs or otherwise. In terms of driving in Greece, the very most important things are often the basic items. These basic items include:

  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Proof of ID
  • Motor Insurance Certificate / V5 registration document

If you’re from the UK or other countries that don’t require an international driver’s license, these are the only items you need to drive a car within Greece.

However, with acquiring a car to hire, Indigo provides all the necessary support. Whether you’re you need a young driver car hire or a senior car hire. Even if you’re in Greece or are perhaps in need of a car hire in Athens Airport. Though if you aren’t entirely sure which service you may qualify for – Our team is always open to supporting you.

Some other things are important to note with Greece if you’re coming from the UK. All cars are required to have certain items always present. These being:

  • Warning triangle in the event of an emergency
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First aid kit

Of course, Indigo will provide a car that fulfils all the legal requirements so you can rest assured and focus on your travel.

Where to go when driving in Greece

To get a true feel for the country, as a visitor you’ll likely want to experience all the different scenery. If a short road trip is something you’re interested in, a short drive between Athens and Patras will take you through most of what driving in Greece has to offer, passing through both bustling cities and scenic mountains; there is something for everyone. Athens serves as a great starting point with how friendly it is to new visitors, with all the necessary infrastructure to facilitate any of your needs. It serves as a beautiful capital for a beautiful country.

Acropolis

For a more up close and personal look at the culture the city offers, one of the many historic landmarks may be worth a visit. The Acropolis is a monumental structure, still standing after so many years. With how much of it remains from the original construction, it serves as an insight into the ancient world. The Parthenon is another local choice if you have a particular interest in its history. However do be warned, to get a good view will be a lengthy trek.

Corinth

From Athens, a straight drive will lead you directly into Corinth. The path itself to Corinth is filled with some worthwhile sights as well, highlighting the Greek mountain tops and lush beaches. A visit to Corinth will provide you with just about anything you need, with places to stay and plenty of choices for the local cuisine, this can serve as a great chance to get a real authentic experience away from some of the more tourists.

Patras Festival

Finally, if you manage to pull yourself away from Corinth. Another short drive through Greece will take you through the waterfronts and beaches – if the weather allows for it could be a place for a quick refresher. Though this will all be worth it for the final stop of Patras, which if you visit at the right time of the year, you may make the Patras Festival in time, which you can prepare yourself for with our blog. Otherwise, there are still of course a plethora of other experiences in Patras whilst providing a nice place to wind down for your final days of the trip.

How Can I Hire a Car in Greece?

If any of these things have been of interest to you, all that’s left is for you to take the plunge and experience it. We at Indigo will work with you to facilitate that experience by providing support for you along the way, as we have with these satisfied customers. For any of the services we provide such as:
