Britains Roads Could Worsen

Another severe winter with flooding and frosts this year could see the forcing of road closures in several places in the UK with roads becoming unusable. The roads are already costing the economy massively with £5bn being poured into fixing the roads yearly. Last years attempt to fix the backlog of needed repairs as 1 in 5 of Britain’s roads are classified as being in a poor condition has been unsuccessful, last year councils fixed 2.2 million potholes which is around 500,000 more than in previous years.

The estimated backlog of prepares as it continues to grow exceeding the amount of yearly repairs is going to cost a £10.5bn total. The LGA which is the representative for 370 councils across England and Wales are calling for more funding for road maintenance to turn the ever increasing debt around and tackle the issue. The councils spending has always been twice what the department for Transport gives them for the fund in order to tackle the pot holes problems, the average English council was about £6.2m short of what is needed in order to keep up with the yearly maintenance which is up for 5.3m as of 2011 which is a large increase.

A survey into the road repairs shows that the average road repair costs £13,600 a year in order to keep it repaired and adequate for cars to travel on. If the road repairs aren’t kept up with it could spell serious trouble for Britain as previously mentioned 1 in 5 roads are in poor condition and will soon worsen in the winter causing them to close, if the worst case scenario happens and 1 in 5 roads across Britain closes it could spell serious trouble and traffic problems slowing absolutely everything down, daily commute, travel, work, holiday, money, economy you name it, roads are very important to keep in good condition.
