Over the previous years, the UK government has implemented a variety of environmental policies in an attempt to reduce pollution; most notably from vehicle emissions. From this, there have been a number of established zones in the UK where restrictions are placed on cars that are not compliant with their pollution guidelines. Whilst sounding simple enough, there is still an endless stream of questions you’ll likely have. Where are the CAZs (clean air zones)? Do they all follow the same guidelines? What’s the difference between the CAZ and ULEZ in London? First thing – don’t worry. We’re here to help you as best we can.
A CAZ is a designated area that has a fine attached to the type of vehicle that drives in it. A vehicle’s type is based on the emission standard. Euro 3 motorcycles, Euro 6 Diesel and Euro 4 Petrol vehicles are the standard from which a vehicle is exempt. If a vehicle does not meet that standard, there will be a fine attached to travel.
It is worth mentioning that Clean Air Zones are distinct from the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London. As mentioned the ULEZ is exclusive to London and has some distinct differences. Whilst the emission standard is the same, the fine is a daily charge of £12.50, which if you’re not planning for can be an unexpected charge. In fact, you can read more on the London ULEZ zone with our blog.
As mentioned, vehicles that meet the appropriate Euro standard are exempt and don’t have to pay the charge. It goes without saying that electric vehicles are also exempt however hybrid vehicles are not. A vehicle must follow the emission standard or else a fine would be issued. However, you don’t need to worry about this when it comes a car rental. All of our suppliers’ vehicles are less than 10 years old and as such are compliant with emission standards; with Indigo you have nothing to worry about except enjoying your trip. If you are still interested in trying out an environmental vehicle, why not try one of our electric vehicles which you can read about in our guide to electric cars?
For a short list of the cities that have or are planning to implement a CAZ:
Whilst the UK is certainly a forerunner in this scheme, other countries even beyond the EU have begun work on similar policies. France for example, has the Crit’Air; a Paris equivalent of the London ULEZ. With similar rules on vehicle emission standards, they instead use stickers to designate the category. With zero-emission electric and hydrogen vehicles being completely exempt. Milan as well for example has some lighter restrictions on travel in their LEZ areas. Being active only from Monday to Friday and allowing electric vehicles, hybrids and motorcycles to be exempt.
Don’t let the Low Emission Zones put a damper on your travel, we will work our hardest to ensure you get the best vehicle that is most suitable for you. This includes our services in:
