There’s nothing more exciting than a long trip; A road trip through the United States or even a drive through the Swiss Alps is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Even if you’re not planning on a road trip, there is still an endless number of times when a long term car hire is the best option. Though as exciting as it sounds, managing travel can always be a difficult thing (but not if you know how to do it right). This piece will serve as the go-to guide for all things regarding long term car hires, which vehicles you could choose and even the other services that’ll save you the most!
A long term car hire is exactly what you think it is, a car that is rented for a longer period than is typical. It is worth noting that there is a difference between long term rent and short term lease. A rental is typically extendable for an unknown period of time but a commitment for a set period of time with a monthly (28 day) fee. Leasing also doesn’t come with insurance and is something the renter has to provide on their own.
As mentioned, there are plenty of situations for a long term car hire but most frequently is work related travel. When travelling for a period abroad or domestically, getting around by public transport may not be available and daily taxis are almost certainly not sustainable. This is all without mentioning how the length of stay can remain ambiguous.
Be it insurance or just which vehicle you’ll need, there are always factors to consider – and that’s why we’re here! First things first is your vehicle, which is right for you? This of course, isn’t something we can tell you, but it sure can help you out. Say for example, you’re interested in travelling somewhere like Canada or Norway; somewhere snowy. Your best bet may then be an SUV car hire for its power and size. If that’s too much for you then it may just be a case of simple snow chains being suitable for you, either way, you can read up on everything you could need to know with our winter guide travel guide and arrange for a suitable long term car rental.
One of the biggest sources of confusion that come from attempting to arrange a vehicle rental is undoubtedly the insurance, far too often the actual details of it are conveniently left out from suppliers. Rest assured, we’ll lay it out. Typically, there is the standard insurance which is the basic insurance more suited for a shorter period and reduces your liability in the event of an accident. We can offer third party insurance which may be more suited for a longer period. This can last up to a year and drastically reduce the excess, in some cases to zero liability!
A car rental, just like anything else, requires some sort of maintenance. Usually with a short term rental you don’t need to concern yourself too much, but if you’re planning on using a vehicle for a long duration, you’ll want it in good condition. There are of course the basics of keeping it clean which (although not required) is a good habit. In terms of functionality, if the vehicle unexpectedly breaks down you will of course be fully insured and not at fault. Millage is another thing to be aware of as you may be limited on how far you can travel without accruing extra cost. If you want to avoid this all altogether then a car hire with unlimited mileage may be for you.
There are a number of reasons you could need a long term car hire. Regardless, we are more than happy to help you however we can even if it’s other than with a long-term car rental or monthly car hire.
