As winter looms and so does the prospect of snow, for some it can either be the part of the year they look forward to the most – others not so much. But it shouldn’t have to be like that. Being prepared for the oncoming snow and ice can make all the difference in how you enjoy the season. Perhaps you are travelling abroad, and you’re worried a forecast of cold may ruin your trip. You may be at a complete loss as to which is the best 4×4 car hire for winter driving. If you are travelling abroad perhaps to Canada in the winter or Austria for the Winter, we already have extensive blogs on how best to do so.
Regardless of your reasoning, there is never a downside to making an informed decision; we can help you with that. It’s no secret that extreme weather can often be the deciding factor in your plans. Though weather should never stop you from your travel; when you are adequately prepared and know how to remain safe, there is no reason to hold off your trip!
If it’s space and power you need, nothing does that quite as convenient as an SUV. With sufficient space for a whole family and storage, they remain uncontested in terms of reliability. If it’s winter conditions you need to travel through, then the majority of SUVs will have no issue in this environment – ice or otherwise.
In terms of the driving performance of SUVs; 4-wheel drive (4WD) and front wheel drive (FWD) are the most common driving systems. 4-wheel drive ensures all tyres of the vehicle are powered via the engine, giving far better traction in conditions beyond even just snow. Front-wheel drive, as the name implies, powers all four tires to provide the greatest traction possible. Whilst both are capable of navigating harsh winter conditions, a 4WD system would be preferable.
Now comes the hard part of any trip, the decisions to make. Rest assured though, with our services, they’ll be no going wrong. If it’s a winter-appropriate vehicle you need we won’t provide anything short of what you need. Even if you do have any doubts on the suitability of our vehicle – we are available to contact and answer your questions.

Now that you’ve got some options for your trip, there are still a few things to consider that can make sure you stay extra safe on your trip. The next most important thing after selecting the car is the option of winter tyres. If you aren’t aware, are tyres specifically designed to excel on snowy and icy environments; an invaluable asset when it comes to travel.
You may be surprised to find out how wildly the laws on winter tires can vary, sometimes requiring strict adherence and at other times merely suggesting their use. Whilst other parts of the world (despite heavy winters), don’t have any laws regarding winter tyres. This shouldn’t be an issue when hiring with Indigo – our providers will fit all cars according to requirements at the time. If winter tires aren’t required but you feel the need, you can choose them as an additional option for added safety. Even though an SUV for winter driving should be more than capable, they may still be available.
When travelling, the first priority should always be safety, though extreme weather conditions can cause you concern in that regard. By adequately preparing and being aware of how to stay safe, you will achieve the peace of mind necessary to focus entirely on your trip.
