Low Cost Convertible Car Hire

Im travelling to Spain in a couple of weeks for a bit of R&R and golf with the lads. We have a few days down time so I have been considering hiring a car to go see a few old faces but mainly cruise around Puerto Banus with the top down.

I know rental cars are very cheap in Spain at the moment but can I really find Low Cost Convertible Car Hire? Well the simple answer is yes, but you need to be aware of who you are booking with and what is included, or more importantly what isn’t included.

I decided to trawl the internet rather than use my contacts over there because I wanted to get a fair comparison and here is what I have found.

All quotes are for 4 days, collecting at Malaga Airport on Monday 30th April, 11.30am and returning to the same location on Friday 4th May, 11.30am.

OK Rent A Car are offering a Fiat 500 Convertible ‘or similar’ (ill come onto what this means) for just £47.28, Yes that’s correct, the decimal is in the right place. Forty Seven Pounds and twenty Eight Pence… So what else do you need to know before booking this ‘too good to be true’ price?

OK Rent A Car offer an excess reduction policy which means you can lower your liability and deposit to ZERO if you pay an extra charge on arrival of €20 per day, this means no hude hold on your credit card and no nasty charges if the car is scratched.

Delpaso Car Hire are offering the same car for slightly more at £56.26.

Delpaso do not seem to offer a way to reduce your excess or deposit which is unusual. What we do know is that they will make you responsible for taking pictures of any existing damage on the car, meaning if you miss some and they sport it when you return, you will be charged.

A larger vehicle from Delpaso Car Hire for a few pounds extra. £70.33 will get you a hard top compact vehicle with the same terms as before.

A name you might of heard before is Europcar, one of the largest suppliers in the world. Unfortunately a well known brand often means higher prices and Convertible Cars In Malaga are no different. £222.20 for the same period here, however you may prefer their terms of rental.

Picking up in the terminal is attractive to most people as it is much more convenient, Europcar also offer an excess reduction package at €26 per day which will reduce your excess to ZERO.

Hertz are one of the most highly rated companies online. You can hire a brand new Cascada from them for £352.04.

This is a high excess and im afraid the cost to reduce to ZERO is high too at €49.03 per day.

Sixt are one of the biggest household names in Europe, with them you can hire a Mini Cabrio for £409.50. A little out of my price range but acceptable to some im sure.

You will hear the phrase ‘or similar’ when hiring a car. This means the supplier can give you pretty much any make of car providing it meets the original specification that you booked. For example, If you book the Volkswagen Golf Convertible, this is a compact, 3 door, 5 seat convertible car with air con. You could end up with an Audi A3 Cabrio, Ford Focus CC, Vauxhall Cascada or indeed any other vehicle they have on fleet which meets the requirements. If they do not have an ‘or similar’ vehicle they should offer a free upgrade.

full to full fuel policy

When hiring a car with a full to full fuel policy the supplier will ask for a small deposit of between €60 to €100 depending ont he size of the fuel tank. You are then expected to the return the vehicle full and your deposit will be refunded. This generally is the most straight forward way, but its not always plain sailing, have a read of this more for information on Full to Full Fuel Policies.
