NewsFlash Driving Licence Counterpart Updates

driving licence counterpart updates 29th of may 2015

We need to clarify the fact that the rental companies won’t need your National Insurance Number (NINo).
You must know your NINo, so you can access and share your driving records with the rental company.

The paper counterpart days are numbered and Indigo Car Hire is offering to its clients the latest Driving Licence Counterpart Updates.

DVLA confirmed that from 8th of June the paper counterpart which was issued with the British driving licence will no longer be valid.

This means that the paper part of your photo card driving licence will no longer be required and in fact the government are advising they you destroy them.

If you wish to hire vehicles in the UK and Ireland you will be required to create a licence check code within 72 hours of the start of your hire. This will enable you to share your driving record with a third party, such as a car hire company or insurance broker. The unique check code will allow someone to see what vehicles you can drive, any penalty points or disqualifications, your name and the last 8 characters of your driving licence number. This licence check code can be created through the link below.

To create the licence check code you need to have the following:

  • your driving licence number
  • your National Insurance number
  • the postcode on your driving licence

Due to this access code only being valid for 72 hours, you will need to be super organised before you leave for your travels! Make sure you go on-line to “Share my Driving Licence” and get your access code no more than 2 days before you pick up the car.

Therefore Indigo Car Hire advises all our customers who hold a valid British driving licence to know their National Insurance Numbers (NINo).
If the client doesn’t know its NINo , then he will not be able access and share his records with the rental company, therefore he wont be able to hire a car in the UK.
Please note that this will only affect rentals in the UK and Ireland as currently the counterpart licence is not required when you rent outside the UK.

The car rental companies will also need a valid ID (passport) and a proof of address.

You can also view your counterpart online for free using DVLA new service “View Driving Licence” which can be found at this link: https://goo.gl/gwBm0w

All you need to view your driving record online is the Driving licence number, your National Insurance Number and the postcode where your licence is registered.
