Driving Without An MOT?

Driving Without An MOT?Driving without an MOT puts you in risk of a fine of up to £1000 as well as it invalidating your insurance, dangerous stuff. So why has the Society of Motor Manufacturers and traders revealed that a third of motorists have driven a car knowing it has no MOT? There are a few common problems and errors that people make when it comes to being on time for their MOT.

Some of the common issues that are related with driving without an MOT involve the test date, most people can find a test date inconvenient and due to lack of time be out of MOT for a few days. It’s often regular that people don’t actually realise that their MOT is out of date until they come to re-tax their car.

The shocking statistics have showed that 67% of drivers admitted to have been driving up to a week before being retested for their MOT. A further 24% admit driving up to a month, and 9% up to and over sixth months without having their MOT! The worst place the survey revealed for people having driven without an MOT was the South West and the best at remember the time of their MOT where people in the East Midlands, perhaps the most shocking statistic of all is that only 15% of people say that they have never driven a car without a valid MOT. Perhaps not surprisingly young drivers where the worst at remembering their test date whereas those between 45-54 where the best at remembering, so statistics show if you are 45-54 and living in the East Midlands chances are your fine!

In order to prevent further people breaking the law the Society of Motoring Manufacturers and traders have teamed up with the Trading Standards in order to bring a free MOT reminder service which alerts you before your MOT is due. Drivers may be avoiding doing their MOT because they think that their vehicle may fail but now the government are backed by every major car maker in the UK for a scheme called Minute or Two which basically is a scheme which means they will visually asses your vehicle including headlights, tyres, windscreen wipers and fluid levels and give you advice on how to pass your next MOT and alert you of simple fixes.

All this backing from different bodies should mean that hopefully less people will avoid putting their car in for an MOT. Only 15% of people haven’t broken the law in regards to driving without an MOT which is completely unacceptable and there is to be a major crackdown in order to try significantly raise this figure.

Having worked in the car rental industry for over 15 years, he really knows his stuff. Rob heads up our marketing department and as a keen traveller, always has a new location to talk about. Particularly if there is a golf course nearby.
