Toll Booth At Faro Airport

We get several people asking about the new Faro airport toll road as it has recently been introduced and people are worried about being charged an extra fee after picking up their rental car. The toll road everyone is referring to is the A22 Motorway which is around 12km away from the airport, it’s a significant distance so that you don’t have to worry about it straight away. People also worry because they think they will need an automatic toll reader in the car in order to pay for the road, this is basically a device with preloaded money to go through the quick lane.

Hiring out several cars a day at Faro airport we get this question a lot from worried customers that have heard “scary” things about the toll road. The problem that occurs with this toll isn’t so much the fact that people don’t want to pay the fee it’s the ease of the options when paying the fee, unfortunately when the Portuguese government made the road a toll road they didn’t add toll booths meaning you need to have a prepaid device, “The tourist trap” the A22 motorway is being dubbed.

You can pass onto the toll road without any bother, you may not even realise it’s a toll road well that’s until you see the small cameras dangling over the road recording your car details. Several people are displeased about this and in rental cars its even been known that people have gone to the post office to pay their tolls and have had to pay the previous users as well as they were unpaid. However there’s no need to get in a panic about it yet, the road is completely avoidable, there are several other options that will lead you to the same destination they just may be slightly busier.

If you do this use this road however then don’t worry, you will later see a payment of a small amount to the rental company as it takes 2 days to materialize the charges, this however is literally just paying for the toll road.
