A question that is being asked more and more is, Can I Take My Dog In A Hire Car?

In short the answer is YES, I think a lot of people are concerned that they will be charged extra at the time of booking if they inform the supplier that they intend to carry a dog in the car.

There is no additional charge but ALL car hire suppliers will have a section in their terms and conditions about charges for excessive cleaning. Basically meaning if a car is returned covered in dog hair, they may issue a surcharge.

To cover yourself against any such charges, clean the car before you return it. Take it to a roadside car wash for a valet or a DIY job on the driveway will suffice. They don’t inspect the interior with a black light and magnifying glass but if you have cleaned any evidence of a dog (or any pet for that matter) being present then there will be no questions asked.

• Use some form of seat protector or a blanket to stop hair, fur and dribble getting everywhere.
• Keep your pets in travel crates where possible.
• Lay a blanket or protective mat over the bottom of the boot when getting pets in and out to avoid damagaing the paintwork.
• Thoroughly clean and vacuum the hire car after the last trip with a pet.
• Ensure the car smells fresh for the next user, a cheap air freshener is about 99p.
• Treat your hire car as you would treat any new car and always take care when travelling with pets.
