Some of the most common problems when hiring a car are related to having the correct identification. This is place to ask any questions related to this.

DVLA NOT OPEN WHEN YOU ARRIVE, WE HAVE A SOLUTION :-)

Mat,

We are all aware and most customers are to be honest that if they do not have their counterpart drivers license on them upon arrival, then they are subject to a DVLA check, in order for the rental company to verify that the license is acceptable in order to rent a car, free of any points and convictions etc etc.

However people can become unstuck based on their arrival times, the DVLA have limited opening hours, and if someone arrives to collect their vehicle outside of the DVLA’s opening hours they can find themselves without a vehicle.

See link below for the DVLA’s opening times.

https://www.gov.uk/contact-the-dvla

One of our supplier has a pretty unique way of helping people, this is, so essentially a check can be done outside of those opening hours.

Bit of a random one. If a customer calls after making a booking booking to confirm what’s on their license, then signs an indemnity form when they get there, they can hire without having to do a DVLA check. Obviously you must be honest in your disclosure :-)

Isnt the supplier opening themselves up a bit here? I and 99.9% of the population will be honest im sure, but what if you make a mistake? I had 3 points for speeding, thankfully they have gone now but i couldnt tell you the date ect

If someone is unclear on conviction types and dates ect, this could cause issues.

Hi guys,

We actually now have a few suppliers that can solve your problem if you arrive after the time the DVLA has closed without the paper part of your license.

They can either do a Pre-DVLA check, which is a little long winded and involves you calling the DVLA, and then them doing so to check your license is clean, or alternatively you can sign an authority form on arrival which means that you sign no say that you have a clean license, or admit to some minor points(everyone's caught speeding at some point unfortunately)! If you do lie at all and then damage the vehicle then you are liable for the full value of the vehicle, so no porkies!

Great to have these options.........

I know that these will be more widely available as all license checks move online, more and more people now a day seem to be unaware that they actually have a counter part to their license.

Worth mentioning too if you are one of the people who simply have the paper part of their license as in you have not been issued with a photo card and counter part that paper part will do nicely to rent a vehicle (although photographic ID may be required in some instances)
