Do you really need additional extras :-)

We always try to discourage people to take extra products from the rental companies, simply because it rarely tends to be the best value option - but I suppose value needs to be weighed up against convenience.

One of the major rental companies at Heathrow Airport make 50% of their revenue from selling 'extras'

There is a quite a lot to say on this subject and obviously various extras that can be taken/rented from a rental company upon arrival some of which are listed below.

- GPS / Satellite Navigation
- Baby seats / Child seats Booster seats
- Additional Drivers
- Zero excess / Top up insurance
- Snow Tires / Snow chains
- Mobile Phone/s / Sim Cards
- WIFI

We will to start with look at the first one GPS / Sat Nav, essential for many of our foreign visitors whom are looking to navigate there way around the UK, I can still remember when rental companies used to sell Road Atlases prior to the introduction of GPS, and they were very good money spinners for the rental companies back then as GPS's are today.

Car Rental companies charge anything from £10.00 a day to hire one of these to £18.00 per day, some companies cap the amount they will charge in any given rental period to between £100.00 - £150.00 some will simply charge on a daily basis with no cap, the cost's can of course mount up.

Using Heathrow as an example and of course this is a good example based on the amount of long haul, foreign travelers inbound to this location, there is a well know Supermarket which is 0.7 miles away from the various terminals and of course we have good old duty free, I would imagine now a days you can pick up a GPS for £50.00 or so, so the math indicates there is a real saving to be made on buying a GPS yourself, you can then retain it for the future, or simply give it away :D

I think a blog on the various types of GPS currently available would be useful for people - Mat is you can please do this.

We will do more work on providing information on further additional extras, as for sure there are some good saving to be made, and we are always here to provide the best possible advice for our customer and the general public too :D
