UK Sees Traffic Volume Increase

Throughout the country the department of transport figures have suggested that the volume of traffic has increased. As an example figure in the second quarter of 2013 the total mileage that was covered by motorists rose by a large 2.9% which totals a figure of 76.8 billion miles covered. It’s not that large of an increase but its bumps the current trends as in the last five consecutive quarters the total mileage rise had actually decreased from 2007 onwards by 1.9%. Despite the amount of miles covered only going up by 2.9% the rise in traffic was up by a total of 6.1% on last year’s figure which is fairly more significant.

Heavy goods traffic seemingly only rose by 1.7% however traffic that includes motorbikes, buses and coaches rose by a total of 8.6%. Don’t think you can escape the large amount of traffic on the motorway either because that has increased by 4.9% which in terms of amount was the largest rise of the quarter in respect to any traffic increase figure. Want to get away from all the traffic? It used to be easy all you had to do is use rural roads, but no not anymore they have risen in traffic by 2.3% also.

Everything apparently seems to be raising in traffic amount if it continues to go this way we could have a large issue with basic tasks such as commuting. The figures above are based upon the department of transports quarterly surveyed figures which they count from using automatic traffic counters which can be found throughout different parts of the country, they as well as counting the amount of traffic can monitor things such as if it is a bus, car, motorbike, lorry or anything else. It does this by measuring and taking into account certain factors such as axle spacing and the length of the machine the only downfall is that it’s not 100% accurate so some of the figures above might be slightly inaccurate but majority of the time its right.

Its interesting the amount of elements that influence the volume of traffic, this traffic increase may not be bad news after all, when the traffic increases it tends to be because the economy has also seen an increase which allows or makes it better financially for people to drive. Another element that plays a large part is weather as many people don’t like driving in frosty winters but love sunny summers, so the increase in traffic could also be down to the warm weather recently.
