RAF Church Fenton Closure

RAF Church Fenton located about 4 miles south east of the small town of Tadcaster has been open from 1937 where it saw its peak activity during the Second World War. The base was used to protect the largely populated regions of Leeds, Bradford, Humberside and Sheffield. There has been a rich history involving the RAF base in the past giving it its rightful mark in the history books.

On March 25th 2013, the armed forces minister Andrew Robathan has released a statement saying the base no longer is required for training. This news came as shock to the locals living on the RAF base and created up roar with many furious about the soon to be closure of the base. Andrew Robathan also stated that for the squadron a new base was too be found but has yet to be established. On April 1st the base was set to be celebrating its 76th birthday although after the recent news it’s not looking to be one of celebration for the people that still remain living on the base.

The decision to close the base comes after the government looked at their reviews in order to cut spending in the armed forces. This RAF base closure follows the closure of many others, and by the looks of it many are yet to come. Is this to mark the slow death of RAF bases in the UK?

The RAF has survived almost 95 years and is the longest surviving independent air force in the world but is the time finally up for the air force that fought several wars for Britain and made us the country we are today? The closures of the several RAF bases are seemingly indicating that the RAF are being hinted at that their services are no longer required within the UK. These closures have made families leave their homes and seen several men and women lose their jobs.
